A Medical Visa is a requirement for any international patient travelling to India specifically for treatment. India makes this straightforward — there is a dedicated e-Medical Visa (e-MV) that can be applied for entirely online. Here is exactly how it works.

What Is the Indian Medical Visa?

India's e-Medical Visa is a triple-entry visa allowing stays of up to 60 days per entry. It is valid for 1 year from the date of issue. Citizens of most countries are eligible to apply online through the Indian government's e-Visa portal. The visa is specifically for patients — one additional attendant visa (e-MV Attendant) can be issued for a family member accompanying you.

Documents You Will Need

Step-by-Step Application Process

  1. Get your hospital invitation letter. Contact Doctira or the hospital directly. This is usually issued within 24–48 hours of confirming your appointment.
  2. Visit the official e-Visa portal at indianvisaonline.gov.in. Select "Medical" as the visa type.
  3. Fill in the application form with your personal details, travel dates and the hospital name.
  4. Upload your documents — passport scan, photograph and the hospital letter.
  5. Pay the visa fee online. Fees vary by nationality — typically USD 25–80.
  6. Receive your e-Visa by email. Processing takes 1–4 business days. Print a copy to show at the airport.

Common Questions

How long does it take?

The e-Medical Visa is typically approved within 1–4 business days. Apply at least 2 weeks before travel to give yourself buffer time, especially if a consulate visit is required from your country.

My country is not eligible for e-Visa. What do I do?

A small number of nationalities must apply through the Indian Embassy or High Commission in their home country. Doctira can assist with the invitation letter and documentation regardless of application method.

Can my family member travel with me?

Yes. One accompanying attendant — typically a spouse, parent or child — can apply for an e-Medical Attendant Visa using the same hospital letter. Additional attendants require a standard tourist visa.
