Travelling abroad for medical treatment can feel overwhelming, especially for the first time. India is one of the world's top medical tourism destinations — but knowing what to expect at each stage removes the stress and lets you focus on your health.

1 Before You Travel

Preparation starts weeks before departure. Here is what to arrange:

2 Arriving in India

Most international patients land in Delhi, Mumbai or Chennai. If Doctira is coordinating your trip, an executive will meet you at the airport and take you directly to your hotel or hospital — you will not need to figure out transport on your own.

Keep your passport, visa, medical records and hospital appointment letter in your carry-on bag. Jet lag is real — plan one rest day before your first hospital appointment if the journey is long.

3 At the Hospital

International patient departments at major hospitals like Max, Medanta, Fortis and Apollo are well-equipped for foreign visitors. Expect:

Your pre-op tests (blood work, ECG, imaging) are usually completed the day before surgery. Use this time to ask the surgeon every question on your mind — they are used to patient questions and welcome them.

4 During Recovery

Most hospitals have international patient wards with private rooms, Wi-Fi and dietary options for various cuisines. Recovery times vary by procedure. Your care team will brief you daily and let you know when it is safe to travel home.

Do not rush discharge. Leaving too early is the biggest mistake medical tourists make. Follow the surgeon's timeline, not the airline's schedule.

5 After You Return Home

Before leaving India, collect all discharge documents, surgical notes, implant records and medication prescriptions. Share these with your home doctor immediately. Doctira follows up with you after your return to ensure recovery is on track and to connect you with the India team if any question arises.
