What to Expect on Your First Medical Tourism Trip to India

1 Before You Travel

Preparation starts weeks before departure. Here is what to arrange:

• Gather all medical records — scans, blood reports, discharge summaries, GP letters. Digital copies on your phone and email are essential.

2 Arriving in India

Keep your passport, visa, medical records and hospital appointment letter in your carry-on bag. Jet lag is real — plan one rest day before your first hospital appointment if the journey is long.

3 At the Hospital

4 During Recovery

Most hospitals have international patient wards with private rooms, Wi-Fi and dietary options for various cuisines. Recovery times vary by procedure. Your care team will brief you daily and let you know when it is safe to travel home.

Do not rush discharge. Leaving too early is the biggest mistake medical tourists make. Follow the surgeon's timeline, not the airline's schedule.

5 After You Return Home

Before leaving India, collect all discharge documents, surgical notes, implant records and medication prescriptions. Share these with your home doctor immediately.
